Cultural Experience By Far/Galat

By far the most cultural experience that I have several times over is going to the Galat Kosher Market on Santa Monica Blvd.

They barbeque kabob in the parking lot on Sunday.  The only time that I wanted shish kabob they weren't cooking.

Their roasted chicken looked scrumptous!  I will try it and share it with my friend Luis.

KINNARA

KINNARA IS AT 15355 Sherman Way , Van Nuys.6/6/13  I was taken by the atmosphere, it was different, a Thai culture tight within this restaurant.  It was pleasant, rich and comfortable in my booth.  The restaurant was packed and I studied the vast menu, to my delight.  It was mostly buisness people taking lunch, and talking about work. Boring!
KALBI BEEF OMG!  Their food is clean, beautifully presented in a lovely atmosphere to dine in, even though a little small.  I desire to go back...

LOS TAPATOS

11045 S. Hawthorne Blvd., it the city of Lennox.  Oh yes, a market with several items exists within a small space for a restaurant in a mini-mall.  A little bit tight of a squeeze inside the small space and it is cash only!  I love the large containers of watermelon juice, mango, Jamaica and horchata.  I also love the Ebola on top of the burrito.  Perfect blend of ingredients for a traditional burrito.  Come here time and time again.

West Los Angeles Farmers Market

Vegetables stand up tall here!
 Beautiful woman, beautiful people!

Eggplant shimmer.

M'Dears Bakery & Bistro

I think this little cute blue restaurant was on Florence Ave. off Manchester a bit.  It was recommended.  I sat in an old beaten up booth.  I ordered up the fried chicken wings, mashed potatoes and spinach.  I was so happy, it was delicious and satisfying through and through, still remember it years later.  I thought this blog was written.  The wings had an ample amount of meat of them.  And so delicious, a great light crispy batter.  I think it's New Orleans style cookin.  The light colored gravy added to the well constituted mashed potatoes.  I loved how they were served from a scooper, making a nice round ball of goodness.  The spinach was so good too and I got a lot of it, with slices of yellow pepper, which enhanced the flavor more than I would think.  I should remember that in my cooking.  She served cornbread on the side that was delicious with flavor and moist.  It's smallness should not be underestimated.  I went back on another occasion and was disappointed with my friend's salad, and what I ordered.  I will definitely go back for that fried chicken wing plate.  Yum!  Judge

from the photo.

CASA SANCHEZ

I love this restaurant.  It has a large table in the middle of the room with a stage.  There were small, private tables in the back and along the sides of the wall.  The staff was friendly, comfortable and hospitable.  Seems like I wrote this blog already.  Anyway, I have my photo to add.  It was a joyous night on my birthday, January 22, 2011.  I was at the height of my career and with my best friend.
We enjoyed a night of mariachis and great food, which I will describe.  I will have to edit this, but I remember the ceviche was great, and very fresh.  I had a traditional Mexican meal of enchiladas, rice and beans.    As you can see, the chips and salsa, pico de gallo and guacamole was spot on. I have wanted to return for great food or a celebration.

MOZZA PIZZARIA

Me, at Mozza!

Yummy pizza, bubbly crust!

Bravo on all pizzas.

Love their herbs.

JIM DANDY CHICKEN/Vermont Maybe

What can I say.  If you can get past the double-pane bullet-proof windows, then you deserve to be here.  This didn't intimidate me but the pass through cash/food thing was a bit much.  It less it was a clean transaction.  I ordered the fried chicken, corn fritters and slaw, I think.  Everything was scrumptious.  The chicken was light and crispy on the outside, and juicy and tender in the inside.  It doesn't get better than this.  I just saw Jim Dandy Chicken on a movie, called, "Inappropriate Humor", even saw my local Kosher market.  Surprise!  Well, this chicken rocks others, by far.  The corn fritters are addictively good.  I just love coming here as long as there an't any homies lookin for a free ride off me.  Later alligator, this chick is pronto bimanous.  I don't work in the area anymore but I will make a special trip of returning.  You rate a 10.  Bravo!

BISTRO LAURENT

3936 Sepulveda Blvd.  Culver City  I found this restaurant by accident, working one day and getting ready to enter the 405 freeway. I parked my car in front.  Their was only a couple of other people in the restaurant.  Laurent was friendly and gracious.   I ordered an egg scramble, recommended by Laurent.  I loved the paper covering on the table, utilizing this negative space for the crust bread, that is delicious.  I ate it all!  They have a great bakery.  The almond chocolate or chocolate Danish is divine.  As I gazed at the interesting art work of Italian families adorning the wall, it created a feeling of their presence.  My scramble came and it looked and tasted great.  I will definitely go back, and actually have in between my first visit and the time it took to write this blog.  By the way, Laurent started in the farmer's market, good for him.

PITFIRE ARTISAN PIZZA

What stands out here, is the outstanding young men that work here.  One young man spoke on simple spiritual matters, making a real connection with me, making me want to return.  I left my temporary job and haven't gone back yet.  Oh yes, the pizza, it's that bubble style, where the dough puffs up.    I ordered some fancy, green vegetable, daily special pizza.  I don't remember the vegetable, maybe it was Chinese broccoli.   I wouldn't order it again but I love all of the other combinations that they do.  The décor is especially nice.  It is open yet warm and comfortable feeling.  The chairs could be more comfortable but okay.  I sat at a communal table until a single opened up, which was a pleasant feel with nice down to earth folks.

THE SLICE

915 Wilshire Blvd.  I had a gift certificate for $5.00 from my frequent flyer miles.  How do you like that?  I got a  slice of cheese, and a slice of pepperoni.  The owner, (I think) was super nice to me.  I chatted him up, of course.  They have a narrow, little tropical space on their side, and a couple of tables outdoors.  It looks like a Starbucks, a little.  The cheese slice was uneventful but the pepperoni was outstanding.  I had the meatballs the next day, they were good enough, but lacked seasoning and flavor with Italian heart.

LAZY DAISY CAFE

The Lazy Daisy Café is consistent, so now I know what to order.  The chicken cobb salad is always good and fresh.  The salmon salad is also very good with a great mix of vegetables.  I find myself craving it's nourishing ingredients.   I also like their egg dishes, for instance, the eggs benedict, and the breakfast burrito.  At lunch they serve fresh pico de gallo.   Service does lag at times, but the staff works real hard at serving many people at a time, and works well together.   For the most part they are consistent, but careful to order the dishes that you know you like.

Z GARDEN

2350 Pico Boulevard, in Santa Monica.  Chicken Chawarma Pita Sandwich, delicious, moist tender sautéed marinated strips, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, parsley and garlic sauce.  Yum Yum!  The French fries were the bomb, with something like Old Bay Seasoning on it.  The water was infused with cucumber and lemon, no one does that.  What a nice addition, and I haven't been back!!!  This little gem should be found.  My friend at Massage Central told me that she lives nearby Z Garden, and  frequents it often with her husband.  I know that my friend likes good, fresh food.  She also recommended Native Foods which I also liked very much, for different reasons.

Tsujita Artisian Noodle

I don't know ramen that well, but I do know good tasting food.  I finally got to visit Tsujita Artisian Noodle.   I found a parking space off Sawtelle Blvd. As I walked from my car I vaguely remembered that they only took cash.  Of course when I got there I was right.  I began to leave when I went inside asking if there was a bank nearby.  Only by chance did I have a twenty dollar bill to take out.  Across the street was the Tomato bank.  What a cute name for a bank.   I used to spell tomato, tomatoe, until my Dad told me of the correct spelling.
I was warmly greeted again by the gracious reassuring young woman that directed me to the bank.  I loved this experience.  First of all, my chair was pulled out for me, but not just remote, caringly done, and then gently pushed me back in towards the bar.  Bam Brothers'.  I settled in as I photographed the chiefs.  I identified the spices in front of me: pepper, Japanese pepper, pepper leaf skin, and chili flakes, in a beautiful, female, small wooden bottle.  I was served a bowl of Tonkotsu Ramen, called negi ramen,  which I immediately ravished.  It's a good thing that I wore contact lens because I would have steamed up my glasses, for my head was stuck in the bowl after the first bite.  I kept eating the deliciously hard cooked noodles. They have 3 levels of doneness that you can order your noodles.  I left them to make them how they do.  They were hard enough to bite, chewy, yet done enough, letting the flavor come up.
I ate my dish as it came and then later after I picked my face up from the bowl,  I added chili pepper, which I liked the best,  The pork was jelled like in a broth of it's own to the upper right.  Scallions abundantly surrounded the bowl.  I finally got to the broth and found it rich and with a good consistency.  I thought of what I heard about the broth being strained through cheesecloth to achieve the perfect clear broth. Perhaps that is the Tsukemen, I look forward to that because this broth did not stand up to the ramen noodles.

NORDSTROM ROOM IN WESTSIDE PAVILLION

This blog is from several months ago.  Coming here for lunch is one of my favorite LA experiences.  I have been coming here for years and remember one year not too long ago (before the recession) enjoying the live piano playing while drinking a glass of celebratory champagne.  Divine and pure decadence.  I loved the moment.  Well, this day, they were  hosting Dine LA, perfect for my favorite LA experience, right?  This week's featured chief was Jason Longfield.  For fifteen dollars, I think it was, you got 2 courses.  I ordered the Ahi Tuna Salad and the crab mac n 'cheese.  Crab mac n' cheese, where have I been?
I had a double experience with both culinary and social.  Tony, the restaurant manager was very friendly, discussing juicing and his recommended Montel Williams brand. Javier was my server.  He enjoys food and the cooking show on tv also.  He said that he likes chief Anthony Boudain.
Okay, here we go,  at first bite, creamy, and served in a soufflé dish with a spoon, nice looking. The consistency was good.  I felt let down with this dish, expecting bits of crab in the dish.   It was hard to tell where the crab was, looking for the taste each and every bite.  It was probably pureed.  Overall, I enjoyed it for what it was, it was good, but I was tantalized and teased but the title, wanting to taste a morsel of crab.
On to the Ahi Tuna Salad, "The Towering Delight", I named it.  At first bite it was fresh, with a sweet flavor, crispy wontons, a light citrus dressing,  with yellow and red peppers, carrots, bean sprouts, jicama, and spinach.  This dish came stacked high with these delicious, surprisingly well balanced flavors.  I would order this on any menu.

FORD'S FILLING STATION

It was a very pleasant day and I was eager to sit outside and have a tasting of a burger that was recommended from a very nice person/server from The Woods, in Culver City, on Washington.  Since I have some time on my hands now I have the privilege of playing restaurant reviewer.
After moving to another table, the smell of urine permeated through the cement walkway.  I couldn't get past this until the burger arrived.  The Ford's Pub Burger came with butter leaf lettuce, roasted tomato, pickle.  Oh that's what that tomato was.  I thought that the tomato was lame, not much substance or taste.  The bun was brioche, again.  I know it's a craze but I love a good plain bun like from Fresh & Meaty or Three Bears BQ, or Bernard's Burgers.  I'm goin there next week, when I get some mo money.  I rate this burger a 7+.  I have to go back, a big mention is theirshowcases of small-batch American distilleries and an awesome full bar.

UMAMI BURGER

By accident, I ended up trying my first Unami Burger when I was visiting Fred Segal's.  I ordered inside at the bar and ate outside at a communal table.  The man at the bar just got over a rush of people and he was so kind and considerate to me, helping me to chose the amber ale.  It was Strands Beach House Amber, I would buy it I liked it so much.  I didn't order the fancy truffle burger.  I ordered the chickpea patty, No, I didn't.  Really, I could have ordered the Manly Burger with beer-cheddar cheese, smoked-salt onion strings, bacon lardons, yum!  But, no I got the hatch Burger, which is a burger with roasted green chilies, American cheese, roasted garlic aioli.  I thought that this would be a good combination but they could have kicked it up a notch, with the heat.  It was good, but a tease.  You know, I think I'll go to Umini today for the manly burger.
The second time I was also at Fred Segal's.  This time I sat outside the crowd where you take your burger to go.  The third time that I came across Umini Burger I was walking around in Westwood.  I just finished lunch so I didn't eat.   The staff was kinda snooty, but I did recommend another burger joint to compare.  I wasn't complainin but I guess they got the just of it.  This burger rates an 8.

TANDOOR-INDIA

I stumbled in for a lunch buffet through a couple's recommendation that I had met at Milo and Olive's, a high end, small plates restaurant.  It was quiet with only another table or two in the low-lit restaurant.  I liked the large comfortable booths.
The selection was vast, and well tended to.  The vegetable korma was my favorite, it was rich, creamy and comforting.  The chicken tikka was also good.  The rice was fresh and fluffy. I love an abundance of nan with the chutneys.  The buffet is the way to go to thouroughly enjoy the fine Indian cuisine.   I especially liked the fresh orange slices at the end of my meal.  My service was kind and attentive.  I left feeling very good from the food and the energy that I felt.  I give you a 9 on your buffet.

My Sweet Meatballs

Sweet aromatic smells of fresh tomato and basil at first look, it is delicate and light in it's color of red   The meatballs simmer to a nice heat as I watch the Miami Heat beat the Indiana Pacers, in the NBA playoff series, game 5 of the Eastern conference.
Meatballs, good meat, pork and ground beef. I prefer more seasoning, salt and pepper, garlic, oregano, chili, cumin, a good consistency , but a little heavy for some.  A cutting of fresh herb and it is delicious.

Burger Lounge

Burger Lounge opening on San Vicente in Brentwood was a much needed place, with only Barney's on San Vicente Blvd. with a decent burger.  This one is better, consistent, and grass-fed beef.  I have gone to Burger Lounge twice and the first time I liked it more.  The second time didn't seem consistent, I'm not sure what it was.  I ordered The "Classic" both times, with organic American cheese, Organic Ketchup, Mustard, Pickles, chopped onion.  I did like these traditional toppings and do enjoy this burger.  Their customer service stands out!  This restaurant gets a 7+.

TWENTY SIX BEACH

Hum! I have finally landed here with my best friend, Herb.  We are enjoying getting used to the French patio like atmosphere as we view the menu.  We both ordered burgers to my delight.  They came too fast though.  I wanted to linger more in my friend's company.  We had a wonderful experience with good food and a warm couple sitting next to us.  The place is small, but with two rooms, and a couple nice booths.  I was going to order the Maytag, with a pear chutney, but I tried the Classic.  I should have ordered differently, like my friend did.  He ordered the UFO which had sour cream, avocado, bacon.  My Classic was huge but I bit into it.  Juicy meat, but again, flavorless.  The bun was way to big and because soggy on the bottom, falling apart.  The tomato slice and shredded lettuce was yuck.  I was expecting more with the show of the size of the burger.  Also the red onion went limp on top of wet lettuce.  I took a bite of my friend's burger and it was surprisingly surprised, liking the sour cream.  These ingredients on the UFO really compliments this burger.  The side of chili accented the experience.  The chili didn't look good but it tasted awesome.  At first bite, a nice size of beef, and a great heat and flavor.  It tasted like Texas.  I will go back again.  The service was excellent, with two nice hostesses at the front.  I give this restaurant an 8+.

BELWOOD BAKERY

I met a young man in Brentwood, eating a wrap sandwich outside of Whole Foods when he recommended Belwood Bakery/Café.  I drove up to Barrington Court, entering on the West side parking lot.  I found a quaint little café with a waterfall outside where I sat.  I really enjoyed the friendliness of the staff and the commitment of providing their  patrons with good, fresh food.  I ordered the Rosemary Chicken Sandwich with lettuce, tomato, swiss, mayonnaise, and dijon mustard.  I enjoyed the sandwich very much but nothing special stood out.  Although, I will go back for a breakfast sandwich of ham, egg, and cheese because it is so close to home and their ingredients are fresh and good so I would give them another shot.

MY OMELET, NOVEMBER 1, 2013

I wanted to use up my bacon and tomato, with tomato used in my pico de gallo that I made last night.  I had Meunster white cheese which sounded okay.  I had the pico and tortillas, so that was it.  My omelet came together fairly well with all of the ingredients cooking evenly and with the cheese, providing a wonderful smokey flavor with the added bacon.  I really liked it and noticed that I had a good plating going on, pleasing to the eye.  I photographed it and will add these photos to the blog.  Please enjoy and know that you can make a delicious omelet as well!

PAMPAS GRILL

My friend Michael recommended this restaurant with several choices of Brazilian BQ meats that you can order along with their selections on the self-service buffet table.  I traveled to Overland and Venice, in the mall area, unable to find it at first.  It is on the South,  East side.  I enjoyed my selections on my first visit, but not as much as my second.  You know how I am about consistency, you go back expecting the same and get something different.  I have to admit I chose a better cut of meat the second time, a  top sirloin. Originally I had the sirloin cap and leg of lamb.  I tried the balsamic tomatoes & onions.   I thought that their tomatoes were fresh and flavorful, probably in season in the month of June.  The collard greens were also good, flavorful and fresh.   The cheese rolls were good, as well as the eef stew.

Plan Check

I will make this blog short because I am sure I already reviewed it last year.  I will look later, so forgive me.  The Chef's Favorite Burger is my choice.  Cheese two ways, bacon two ways, ketchup leather, sunny fried egg, hot sauce.  Yum and beautifully presented in a cast iron grill, along with their French fries as well.  The PCB is also a winner with schmaltz onions, and dashi cheese.  I want to try their smokey fired chicken and cured meats, cheeses and pickles, especially the spicy cucumber, siracha, sesame.

PHORAGE

Nicole was kind to talk to the owner and allow me to have a quick lunch after they had a closed sign on the door.  With Nicole's sweet personality she turned out adding to this experience, creating relaxation.
The small clear silver metal chairs with wood tables were nice.  I ordered the Banh Mi pork sandwich.  At first bite, it was beyond, so delicious.  The first bite says it all.   The freshness of the cilantro pops out.  It reminds me of Vietnamese roll yet on a bun, with pork.  OMG.  There was a nice sweetness, with the right amount of ingredients of shredded carrots, cucumber, mayo and  jalapeno on the side.  The small baguette was fresh and very good.  The dressing was tangy and sweet and made the Banh Mi sandwich.  I didn't know how good it was until I went somewhere else, and yes I did!  I can't wait to go back.  This restaurant gets a 9 rating.  Oh, they are at 3300  Overland Blvd. in Culver City.

Palace Chinese Restaurant

I tried to go to Enzo & Angela's but they just closed at 2:30.  I always like the quality of food at the Palace Restaurant.  Today, the dining room was full, it was pleasant.  It took forever to get a menu and a glass of water, which I enjoy once I am seated and relaxed to have gotten there.  I ordered the Singamore noodles with pork and shrimp.  It was a huge portion but I began using my chopsticks and adding some serachi to this dish.  It was fresh, hot and delicious, with a nice flavor.  I met people sitting next to me that gave me other restaurant recommendations, my list continues on.  I left sated and with a good fortune in my cookie, "people enjoy my expressionism".  A good experience and meal.

BREAD & PORRIDGE

This restaurant can not be under estimated.   I now refer to their omelets as" the pregnant omelet".
I have been going to Mark, the owner of this fine restaurant since they opened, maybe 10 years ago.  I can't find an omelet made like Benjamin's anywhere.  He has a knack for adding many ingredients held within a fluffy lite outer casing of egg, cooking everything perfectly, which is hard to do without over cooking the outside. I met Luis, whom has worked in the kitchen for the past 8 yrs.   Today I ordered the swiss chard, mushrooms, onion and goat cheese with the help of my server.  I also like the spinach omelet.  This flavor of the goat cheese was the perfect choice of omelets today.  The side of roasted potatoes is always cooked thoroughly, but not over done.  I absolutely love the additional tray of black beans and pico de gallo.  I just noticed that they now use  smaller dishes to contain these delectable delights.  The service is impeccable, professional and friendly. The guys are so damn efficient here!   Bread & Porridge comes with a loud bustling Saturday crowd.

Babies Bad Ass Burgers Food Truck

Well, per neighbor Tim's recommendation, I traveled to Beverly Hills, Civic Center Drive to Babies Bad Ass Burger Truck.  I waited in line as I chatted to a young, handsome man about the truffle burger that he was contemplating ordering.  I of course needed to try "The All American Girl", classic burger.  The young woman greeting and taking orders was pretty with red lipstick, like their truck, and lively about taking your order.  At first bite, it tasted good, but then I began to critic it.  I didn't like the brioce bun, it was too large for the burger, but grilled nicely.  I still like, the regular bun, don't change what works, huh?  I did enjoy their burger but do not crave it.

Pono's Hawaiian Burger

I just left Brick & Mortar when I happened to see Pono's, with just the word written, "burgers" on the aluminum sided building called a "quinsett", (hut), as my server, Brian told me.  I just saw Pono's review on the news last week and then Sasha, from Bristol Farms recommended it.  The Kuawa Crunch was recommended by a nearby patron.  It has 1 yr. Hook Cheddar, housemade organic russet potato chips, housemade cole slaw, housemade spicy guava rum sauce. The cheese is from Andrew's Cheese.   My classic was great and I only wish that I could have eaten more than a third of it because it is best served hot and fresh. When it was served the look of the burger was peeking out and I liked that, seeing the meat filling out under the bun.  The bun was very good, with a good size.   I loved the first bite of a dill pickle slice and the heirloom tomato, which made a big difference.  When I finished I went to back where the kitchen is.  I met Marlin, he comes with 8 years of experience with burgers and takes much pride in what he does.  I very much look forward to returning to Pono's to try the Kuawa.

Thursday, October 31, 2013

I'm a blogger, I'm a gobbler, it's Halloween night.  I write to share the pono burger.  I heard about it on the news last week and then Sasha, an employee of Bristol Farms, new, beautiful market, recommended it.  I was on my way back from Brick & Mortar Restaurant (of course, trying their burger), when I saw the aluminum siding building that only had the word, Burgers, on it.  I could smell it.  A parking spot was open, a sign from the burger Gods!  I went in to be pleasantly surprised.  After I entered the "Quansett"(hut) building, as informed by Brian, my wonderful server, with a down to earth presence, calming.  I ordered the "Classic", chuck, (grass-fed) onion marmalade, Hook's 1 year old cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, on a brioche bun.  The burger arrived with the meat peeking out at me.  Delicious first bite, hot, flavorful, fresh and fantastic.  I loved biting into the dill pickle slice.
They use white oak to cook their meat and Marlin comes to Pono with tons of great experience, but most of all, heart and a true love for cooking for people.
Tasting left overs the next day I was surprised to have the Brick & Mortar burger stand out.  I give Pono's a 9.

FIVE GUYS

This burger was recommended by the manager of Rejoice Juice on Pico.  I was walking around Westwood one afternoon when I saw Five Guys and went in to try their burger.  It comes with a double patty which I didn't like, I should have ordered their little cheeseburger. This meat had no sear on it.  The meat had no flavor to speak of.  The toppings were ok and ordinary. The fries were not good.   The bun, I can't even remember.  No love in this chain of burger land.

TRAILER PARK FOOD TRUCK

I ran into this truck by mistake, walking to the bank on Wilshire Blvd.  I stopped to check the truck out because I liked the name and the beige color of the truck.  I ordered a macaroni and cheese sandwich.  It was heavy, with thick bread, but nicely grilled.  The mac n cheese was okay, with large shells.  I ate half of it and had the other half the next day.  This sandwich really grew on me, it was different, but after getting used to, crave for it again.  Oddly enough, when I was helping out dogs and people from the Barrington Towers fire last Friday they were there, on Wilshire Blvd.  They didn't have a cup but I got one from the fruit vendor and then they filled it with water for me.  They were stressed under the situation of being barricaded on Wilshire, with the street closed down and full of people evacuated from their apartments.  See you guys soon, huh?

ME SO HUNGRY FOOD TRUCK

Today I looked for the Azteca truck to find Me So Hungry on Wilshire Blvd.  They were promoting their food truck by giving away burgers.  The line was very long, with a  half hour wait.  I saw their large sign that they had Ramen Burgers now, so I waited.  Gab, the director was filming and wanted to interview me taking "the first bite" but they were busy with someone else when I received my ramen burger.  At first look, it seemed small.  I smelled it, and it smelled good but not much of a meat patty.  I took a bite and liked the different texture but was trying to figure it out.  It didn't mesh together very well.  I would have liked it with a different sauce, maybe spicier, and arugula to balance out the ramen taste and to compliment the scallions.  Overall is was okay, but I missed the regular bun and lettuce, tomato, onion and condiments.  Sorry, but will try again.

R&D KITCHEN

What took me so long to go here?  I think that I heard someone mention R&D Kitchen as a very good restaurant, so it went left on my list for a couple of months or so.  I recently became curious again since I starting reviewing and writing in my blog and it was so close to home.
I had a craving to out for Italian food up to the Barrington Court or across the street to Enzo & Angela's.  Then miraculously I remembered that I wanted to try the spaghetti and meatballs at R&D.  Heck, I needed to drink my smoothie before I could possibly eat lunch at 1:00.  When I saw the restaurant right away with a parking space available, I knew that was a good sign.  I walked in to be warmly welcomed by Sydney.  What a doll!  She told me that it would be a 15 or 20 minute wait.  I was glad to finish my smoothie in the warm sunshine of the day.  She quickly came to get me when I had chatted up the father and son going in before me.  They like the sandwich special sometimes, but overall like everything, except something off with the spaghetti, maybe too large of a dish.  They commented on the slim selection but what they did was well done.
I was seated at a nice table, well lit, and after settling in noticed a burning candle next to the stainless pepper mill, which I always need to ask for in a restaurant.  Their was a lot of detail and care put into the table arrangement.  I opened the white linen napkin to find a beautiful knife, solid, with a great handle.  I forgot to look for the name on it.  I need new knifes, especially like this.
My server, Elle, greeted me with a warm smile.  When asked of her recommendations she named a few items but when she mentioned the chicken sandwich, she face lit up.  I told her my thoughts of ordering the spaghetti but instead, ordering three side dishes.  I definitely am glad that I did.  Elle even asked me if I wanted it to all come out together or separately.  No one seems to ask that and I appreciated the extra touch of customer service, which kept occurring throughout this lunch experience.  Elle and another server brought such positive energy to the day, adding to the experience again.  Elle asked if I wanted ketchup or their spicy mayonnaise.  I vacillated a moment when she suggested both and asked if I would like to try their thousand island.  I ended up with all three.  Yepee!  I received a flat long narrow white dish holding five proud deviled eggs, perfect with the Halloween theme of evil, and then mixing it with an angel food cake.  Then came a stainless cup and paper inside holding beautiful golden fries, not too skinny. They were very good, well seasoned, and salt too.  The best fries, actually, that I've had anywhere else.  This was a huge compliment.  The first sauce I tried was the best, thousand island, which I don't really like.  It is a secret recipe of chives, parsley, red pepper, chipotle and mayo, as far as my detection could tell.
I now was in anticipation of seeing the chicken meatballs.  OMG, they came three meatballs, in a white oval dish.  They looked great but the first thing I thought was that there was too much tomatoes for my acid reflux to handle.  They were excellent, and then my thought was maybe I should have ordered the spaghetti to accompany them.  No, no these meatballs desired showing on their own and held up, hands down!
Now I'm eating the French fries and keep going back to them.  The deviled eggs will have to wait their turn again.  They didn't capture me but the crunch of the small cubes of celery did.  Mustard was the first thing to come out after first bite.  Elle came by again to check on me and I asked about the restaurant's owner and long it had been there.  She said that it is a family owned business with George Bile, the proprietor, and his son David now managing the chain of restaurants. They opened in Nashville, Tennessee in 1976.   I was amazed that this was a chain restaurant, with so many elements to make a successful restaurant, especially consistency.  It is hard to control everything that could go wrong and make it work out.  When I complimented the deviled eggs for the crunchiness I was told that it is also a secret recipe from Grandmother Ding.  How cute is that!  Also the ground chicken meatballs consists of a secret cinnamon, pickle relish.
I was now being asked if they could bring me a fresh cup of fries.  Are you kidding? Who does that?   I was reminded that they do that but not a lot of people know about it.    I graciously accepted and my water was refilled, right on time.  I laughed as I looked across from me to see a woman putting a black moustache on her face.  Their companion told me that their shrimp Louie is the best in town and referenced Musso and Frank's Grill in Hollywood, a legendary restaurant, know for their shrimp Louie and most certainly, their martinis with olives.  My neighbor went on to say the R&D Kitchen's food is all good, simple and they do it well.
And yes, it get's better, Elle now offers me a desert.  I accepted and gave her an honest compliment of her genuineness, etc.  I saw a beautiful, golden crème brule in front of me now.  OMG again!  At first bite was the sound of the top cracking, lovely.
Sydney told me as I was leaving that Bandera, next to my apartment, is their sister restaurant.  Hillstone Restaurant on2nd Street is also theirs.  I was in heaven with this whole experience and I was caught off guard, not expecting what I received.  This was the best experience I have had in most of my years, for many reasons.  With the staff, the atmosphere, the quality, taste and presentation of the meal, it ranks highest marks.

AZTECA FOOD TRUCK

Dude, this burrito was the bomb.  It had good meat, with a very good flavor and lots of spicy heat.  I looked for them the next week but they weren't there.  I will follow them on twitter.  Wish I could write more after my next burrito.  It certainly was memorable.

CEMITAS FOOD TRUCK

This was one of the best tacos that I have had in town.  I happened to be across the street at the pet store on Pico & Sepulveda.  I was hungry and wanted something light since I would be having dinner in a few hours, which was in my previous blog.  I didn't expect anything but a truck taco but that isn't what I received at all!
The taco had a fresh tortilla, handmade.  The taste is what is supposed to stand out, and it did.  The carne asada was good, not fatty, or over cooked and with a great spice.  I think the family said they are from Michoacán.  Forgive me for spelling this wrong too.  I need to go back to try it again, I had this blog in draft mode too long, sorry.  Oh, yes, I did go back and tried the burrito, and the flavor was not of my taste.

North End Pizzaria

This pizza is really good!  I ate four slices of cheese pizza.  When I called to inquire about delivery Carlos kindly took the time to look at my request for their pizza that had artichoke in it with two other ingredients.  I decide on cheese pizza.  I felt confident with my friend Joe's recommendation that this pizza was killer and that as a "foodie", I would be happy.  I was so happy, I was in pizza heaven.
Since this time I am a regular and enjoy visiting Andrew in his restaurant.  He is proud of his Italian dressing, which is more delicious than mine.  Andrew has made a cozy with nook within this mini-mall which holds Western Bagel, Tasty Wok, and a wonderful bakery with you can buy small tiramisu and fruit tarts.  Yum!  And of course, "The Nook" neighborhood eating, which decently delicious.  I went there for my birthday and ate mussels.  Oh, it's located on Santa Monica Blvd. East of Barry Avenue.
I also enjoy the all meat pizza, and any others that you may like on the menu.  I haven't tried the salads yet, but look forward to.  Thanks for great pizza that I can have delivered or go enjoy in your café style restaurant.

Burger Heaven! The Find!

Hey ya all, I'm back, looking for the best burger in town.  Even though I've almost turned vegetarian.  I have been juicing for the last year.  Your body starts to tell you what it doesn't want and then you have to figure out what it wants and adjust.  My love for burgers began eight years ago in South Los Angeles, Three Bears Barbeque and Bernard's Burgers.  Living in West Los Angeles it is hard to find a classic burger with onion, pickle, lettuce, tomato, cheese, ketchup and mustard.  I have eaten at several establishments that provide you with a decadent, high end burger, but not what I crave.  The meat needs to hold together with plenty of flavor, good toppings, a simple cheese and bun, just a lot of love.  Tradition seems to be a key element in the consistency of the classic burger found on my past journeys.   I can't wait for my next burger experience, I feel, as I write this.
I tried The Golden State at 426 Fairfax, across the street from Cantor's Deli.  It is a little place.  I was told about The Golden State, it was on list, when I saw Guy Fiori debut it on the cooking show.  Guy loved the pulled pork with marinated jalapenos, which they only serve on Tuesday night I was later told.
The burger came with a happy, shiny bun.  It was a brioche bun.  The meat was good but under-seasoned, my number one complaint of most burgers.  The arugula and aoli were good.  I missed red onion.  It was a solid burger for taste and with Tillamook cheese.  The cutest thing was when a little boy, (about 6 years old) with his sister and father stated, "I could eat this burger a hundred million times".  It was very good overall.
The fries were no great shakes but the service rocked!  I think I might have underestimated this burger and will go back again to see, or taste, may it be.  I give it a 7, maybe missing some love.   Stay tuned for my rating system.

NATIVE FOODS

What a delicious, nutritious meal.  I had the Bangkok Curry Bowl.  It was filled with kale, nicely cut, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and moist , brown rice. The top of the colorfully seductive  bowl was accompanied with nice, large, grilled strips of seared tofu.  The curry has a wonderful heat to it, of perfect measure. The curry consists of a lemongrass infused coconut milk curry.  It was flirting with a dash of cilantro.  I couldn't finish this bowl is was so large.  I met the manager, a nice, friendly and informative person.  Their tea was quite good, with a selection to choose from.  Now that I am practically vegan, unless I'm eating burgers or pork, I crave this type of dish.  Oh, this Native Foods is on Ocean Park Blvd. in Santa Monica.

WEST SIDE TAVERN

A good tip but off by marks.  This owner is committed to a good burger, 100% Angus Beef, cooked on a very hot grill to get that nice sear. The cut is 80/20.   My server, Danny was delightful, as all the other crew.  Young, helpful, down to earth people, how refreshing. Danny reminded me of Marina del Rey's Barnes & Noble bookstore after I mentioned that almost all of the bookstores are gone today. I sat at a table that had a nice view of Pico Blvd.  It felt open and spacious, and warm inside.  They decorated the restaurant with dark wood and low lighting.  I loved the old-fashioned cheesecloth or is it burlap, napkin.
This restaurant was recommended to me by a patron of the new Bristol Farms Market on Wilshire, which I love!  When I talk up burgers people pipe in and give me their recommendations, I love that.  That tells me that others are as passionate about their burgers as I am.
The first thing that I noticed was the nice smoky, savory smell.  It had a beautiful bun, I think one of my favorites.  The thing about reviewing so many burgers is that you might need to return for another tasting in order to critique the most recent burger. So it is important to be very descriptive in my writing.  This burger is adorned with garlic aioli, carmelized onions, arugula and Tillamook cheese.   At first bite you have a nice combination of ingredients, which caught my attention.   Although, it could have been more seasoned with pepper.  Of course I miss the raw onion but they didn't overpower the burger with carmelized onion.  The sweetness of the onion could have taken away from the burger, but it didn't, bravo.  Again, I was told that the owners pride themselves in finding the best tasting meat and participated in many tastings before their came to their end product.   My criticism  would be to work on it's taste and texture to perfect it.
The fries were skinny, airy and surprisingly with a good flavor.  I don't know if it was by accident or not but the small cup container that held the fries was a perfect shape and size to keep the fries hot.  I think that keeping the food hot is very important.  The ketchup was ok, but ordinary and they could entertain the idea of checking out Plan Check's, which is superb.  Anyway, these French fries are addictive to me and I can't say that about any others except at the Mediterran restaurant on Pico by Santa Monica High School.  I think they put old bay seasoning or something on them that make them delicious.  And their water has cucumber in it, love that!
I told Danny that I liked an amber beer and he recommended the Beach House.  It couldn't disappoint, I would buy it in the market, it was that good.  This restaurant gets a 9, with young, cute, nice waiters with great service.  Another reason that they received a 9 is because the music was great.  I am sated and wait for my return visit.  Will I have a burger or try the tuna?  For sure I will order fries.

BRICK AND MORTAR

On Main Street in Santa Monica lies a quaint, tucked in kinda place.  I liked it, especially the friendly staff.  I was invited in to the bar for a drink to start but I declined and sat on a small enclosed patio.  The chairs were primo, with tufted, cushiony seats.  Oh yes, the burger.  Well, to start it is cooked on a grill and with a lot of pride by the owner and his chiefs.  The cut is 80/20.
The brioche bun wore a top of a large jalapeno with a green tie knot stick to match it's color.  A very clever touch.  The bun was good, but a little dry, falling apart a little.  The meat lacked seasoning, I thought, until later when I ate the remainder.   The flavor sunk through and it was delicious, memorable and that's what I am looking for in a burger.  The onion marmalade helped to enhance this taste, but it seemed to get lost in the brioche bun.  Perhaps it shrunk due to my ordering it medium done instead of my usual medium-rare doneness.  The burger did get a little lost in the bun, not filling it out.  At first I liked the chopped lettuce, which I prefer over arugula, which a lot of people are doing now.  By the time I was finishing the burger the lettuce appeared limp and wet and taking away from the overall gastronomical experience.  The cheese could have been pumped up a noch, adding to the integrity of this burger as well.  I found the fries, skinny, but too puffy with air instead of taste.  The truffle shavings were pretty and different for me, although I prefer a good ketchup.  Since I relinquished the urge to order a beer, instead I was tempted by the side of mac n'cheese.  It was good, creamy and with bread crumbs atop.  Everything comes with a top here, huh?  There was a wonderful heat to it which gave it a kick, but I was told by Frankie that there was no spice in it.  Perhaps my taste buds were lingering over the jalapeno bites.  When I ate it the next day it was still spicy and much more delicious after putting it under the broiler to give it a nice crust top.  Comfort food! Umm, umm, good.  Thank you Frankie for seducing me into coming back for a dessert, on you, soon!  Just don't let me go back to Buffalo Bill's coz I might not fit in their jeans after dessert.  I give this restaurant and burger an 8!
